The Gule Wamkulu (Great Dance) is a dance cherished and sacred to the hearts of the Chewa people of Malawi and embodies the spectrum of life’s emotions and actions. It is a symbolic, religious masked dance performed by the Nyau society at male initiation ceremonies, funerals, and major local and national celebrations. The symbolic nature of the dance acts as a medium between the ancestral world of spirits and the mundane present.
