-------

Frederick Douglass rose from enslavement to become a powerful orator, writer, and advocate for freedom, equality and human dignity. The Maasai, a semi-nomadic pastoralist people inhabiting Kenya and Tanzania with strong traditions of speaking for the collective good and defending their way of life, would have found in Douglass a voice and example aligned with their own values of courage and communal justice.

His unyielding commitment to breaking chains of oppression, uplifting the marginalized, and forging pathways for meaningful change reflect qualities the Maasai recognize in their leaders. In bridging his moral leadership with the Maasai tradition of communal guardianship and the respect for integrity, he would naturally have been seen not just as an ally but as a trusted elder-counselor, guiding the people with the same dignity, voice and vision for collective freedom that defined both his life and the Maasai ideal of responsible leadership.

This piece was specially commissioned and created for the Frederick Douglass Exhibit presented by the Hampton University Museum during the 2025 Art Basel in Miami, FL.
